Physical Education

At Saint Anne’s we strive to ensure every child reaches their full potential with sports and physical activity through high-quality provision. We ensure the skills, values and opportunities created through Physical Education play a vital part in the daily lives of our children. Physical activity not only has a positive impact upon academic learning but also the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our children. Through our school mission statement, ‘achieving excellence through our God-given talents’, we want our children to leave with a lifelong love of sport and physical activities, recognising their own God-given talents.

It is our intent that children leave St Anne’s being able to

  • Undertake activities which need a different approach and way of thinking.
  • Develop their ideas in a creative way
  • Set targets for themselves and compete against others individually and as team members.
  • Understand what it takes to persevere, success and acknowledge others’ success.
  • Respond to a variety of challenges in a range of physical contexts and environments.
  • Become skillful and intelligent performers.
  • Discover their own aptitude and preferences for different activities
  • Make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives.
  • Develop positive attitudes to participation in physical activity.

Rationale

Through our PE curriculum, we want all children to understand the skills, techniques and processes involved in what they experience each day. We want them to use these skills to develop their competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, to be physically active for sustained periods of time, to engage in competitive sports and activities and to lead healthy, active lives. Engaging in a broad and balanced PE curriculum, enables all pupils to grow in competence and confidence, being challenged to embrace roles beyond the learner such as umpire, coach and official. Our PE curriculum provides plenty of opportunities to build and mold character, embedding key transferrable values such as equality, teamwork and respect, which can be applied throughout the curriculum.

COMING

SOON...

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even the youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on the wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

Equality of Provision and Inclusion

Equality of provision and inclusion is a vital part of our curriculum at St. Anne’s. We recognize that our children come from many different demographics. As a tea, we work to strive to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to participate in high quality PE and sport, regardless of their background, ethnicity, gender, ability or any other personal characteristics. We provide our children with a range of sporting opportunities in PE lessons, after-school clubs and inter-school competitions through the School Games and BCSSA. Through our curriculum, we actively promote Safe, Equal and Welcome ensuring that children can identify how to follow these through PE and other avenues.

SMSC and Rights Respecting in PE

Spiritual education involves pupils developing a variety of skills, e.g. performing a sequence in gymnastics, which allows the pupils to express their feelings and emotions as well as be amazed by what their bodies can achieve.

Moral education in PE concerns pupils having the opportunity to understand how PE can influence their healthy living and lifestyle. PE highlights the advantages of health and lifestyle through team sport sports and health related fitness. Pupils are also able to understand the rules of activities and the reasons why they need to abide by them and understand what fair play is.

Social education involves pupils having the opportunity to work as a team, as well as reflect on feelings of determination and enjoyment. Pupils are given the role of a coach or leader to develop their social skills in co-operation, communication, commitment, loyalty and team work.

Cultural education in PE means pupils are given the opportunity to learn games and dances from different traditions, including their own as well being able to appreciate the differences between male and female roles within sports

Examples of SMSC in PE at St. Anne’s include:

  • Pupils reflect on values surrounding competition and being able to play well as sports people ensuring fair play always happens.
  • Pupils learn how to handle success and defeat with dignity.
  • Pupils are introduced to tactics and strategies in sport.
  • Pupils discover the role of sport and dance in society and the arts as well as learning dances from different cultures through whole school international days and foundation subjects immersion.

Reading and Vocabulary in PE

At St. Anne’s we value the importance of Reading and Vocabulary across our curriculum. We ensure that in PE lessons, children are introduced to skill specific vocabulary and are taught how to use subject-specific vocabulary in their learning through pupils discussions and questioning from the teacher. All staff have access to vocabulary pyramids that show the progression of the vocabulary across the PE curriculum from EYFS to Year 6.

PE develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We provide the broad and balanced of physical education, we believe every child should have; with activities designed to be enjoyable, vigorous and purposeful.

All children learn the skills in:

  • Dance
  • Invasion games- Football, Hockey
  • Net wall games- Tennis
  • Athletics
  • Health related fitness
  • Gymnastics

These skills begin in Reception and progress in difficulty up to Year 6.

Promoting and Maintaining Healthy Lifestyles

At Saint Anne’s Catholic Primary School we understand that promoting physical and emotional well-being is a crucial part of every child's development. We aim to equip all our pupils with the skills and attitudes they need to make informed decisions about their health.

These are some of the ways we encourage our children to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles:

  • Through our P.E. experience a range of different and learn about the effects and benefits of regular exercise. We also offer an extensive range of sports clubs after school.
  • We are involved in the Health for Life to promote an ethos and environment with a focus on Growing food, Physical activity, Healthy eating and cooking skills.
  • The importance of balanced nutrition and healthy food choices is explicitly taught through the Science, D.T. PSHE curriculum.
  • We develop children's knowledge and understanding of the importance of water in their diet by encouraging all children to bring in a water bottle so they can have access to water throughout the day.
  • All KS1 children are provided with one portion of fruit every day. KS2 children are allowed to bring their own choice of snack for morning break time, but it has to be either a piece of fruit or vegetable.
  • We provide play equipment and designated areas which promote physical activity at break times and lunch times.
  • Our PSHE curriculum allows children to explore and understand the different feelings they experience. Through this we are able to teach our pupils techniques for dealing with their emotions in a responsible manner.

Your child should be doing 1 hour of exercise to reduce the effects of obesity later in life.

In school, we provide activities through the school day for your child to do  30 minutes of exercise. We achieve this through:

  • Active Maths sessions
  • Plan lessons where the children are more physically active
  • Encourage activity during play time and lunch time through games and using the gym equipment.

You then need to provide 30 minutes of exercise for your child at home. This could be through:

  • Going to an activity outside of school e.g. or dance class
  • Come to an after school club provided by
  • Play outside with friends e.g. bike
  • Swimming
  • Going to the park
  • Complete an Active Maths session together

Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Which is why at Saint Anne’s both teachers and children are aware of its importance.
