Key Reasons for Running Clubs at St Anne’s
|
Football Club
Football club runs in the autumn and summer term for KS2. Our sessions are really fun. We learn how to play as part of a team and improve our skills too. We play lots of rapid team games and we find out about the different roles within a football team.
Football clubs are very popular as the pupils are often offered opportunities to participate in fixtures through our Birmingham Catholic Schools partnership and South Birmingham District Football partnership.
BASKETBALL
With an increased interest in Basketball over the last few years, we have bought in coaches from Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club to teach Year 5 and 6 children the game. During the hour session, children work on developing their basic awareness of the game and the skills needed to play. The children are working on their dribbling and passing skills whilst playing small 3v3 games against each other.
chess
Chess is a highly engaging game, which the children thoroughly enjoy learning and playing. Pupils learn in a fun, relaxed and social environment, helping each other to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding. The communication skills of pupils improve greatly in Chess Club as they demonstrate and teach key points that they have discovered to other children.
Pupils regularly share ideas about tactics, strategies and different solutions to a variety of scenarios. Chess provides a wonderful platform for the children to test out their problem solving skills. Our children have an opportunity to challenge themselves against other children by representing the school in a Chess Tournament during the Autumn Term.

LEGO CLUB
Children in Year 3 and Year 4 currently have the opportunity to attend Lego Club. This club helps to develop the children's problem solving skills whilst working well together as a team. Not only do the children focus on building different Lego figures, but they also experience coding. As part of the Cargo Connect scheme, the children will build structures and vehicles that would be used when transporting cargo. They then use the Lego Spike equipment, to create their own robot that is programmed to move by themselves.
DRAMA
Drama Club happens every Tuesday for children in KS2. Children work together within a friendly and encouraging environment and are provided with the opportunity to build their confidence and self-esteem. By allowing children to be imaginative, they have the chance to develop creatively, physically and socially. In Drama Club, we play games and practise many different skills such as physical theatre, improvisation, use of body and voice and script reading. At the end of the term, children will experience putting together a performance for an audience.
tENNIS
We use a specialist coaching company which uses fun, age appropriate activities designed to get young children active. Sessions begin with a fun, high energy warm up focusing on footwork exercises, relay races or high intensity games. Followed by some drills that help develop the children's agility, balance and co-ordination.
Gymnastics Club
Gymnastics provides an excellent foundation for many sports by helping children to develop agility, balance and coordination. Our pupils are very fortunate to be taught by Chris Porter (Birmingham Gymnastics Club) who really pushes them to go beyond their limits.
CHOIR
KS2 Choir meet and sing songs from a variety of genres weekly. They particularly enjoy singing songs from musicals, current music in the charts and traditional repertoire. They are very fortunate to be lead by Mr Hawkins and this has really enhanced the choir's performances. The choir some great opportunities such as taking part in competitions and singing at a local recording studio. We are looking forward to another successful and musical year with our school choir.

Safety During After-School ClubsDoes your child attend an after-school club elsewhere? It is important that you check that any sports club or activity that your child attends has your child’s safety as its priority. Even if the club seems professional, there are four key questions that you should ask to make sure that they have all the necessary safeguarding measures in place: Can I see your safeguarding policy? - A good organisation or club should have up-to-date safeguarding procedures in place and be happy to show you copies. Who is your Welfare Officer? - The club should have a designated Welfare Officer who is responsible for dealing with any safeguarding concerns that may arise. Do you follow safer recruitment procedures? - Every organisation providing sporting activities to young people must ensure they have the correct recruitment processes in place which includes interviews, references and have undertaken the appropriate police checks for their volunteers and staff. How do you promote the welfare of children and young people? - The club should be able to demonstrate how they actively promote safeguarding. This includes listening and responding to the views of children and young people. Don’t be afraid to question. A good and professional organisation will already have procedures in place and will welcome the chance to demonstrate that they are providing a safe environment for your child.
