School Council |
A school council is a formal group of pupils who act as representatives of their classmates in discussing school issues with the headteacher and staff.
There are lots of reasons to have a school council. To begin with, Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives. A school council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions that impact upon them. School councils are a great way for students to take on leadership roles, promote the voice of the student body, problem solve and impact their community.
The School Council works to make improvements to the school and the way we do things at St Anne’s. We look around for things that could be better and discuss what to do. Everyone gets a chance to share their views and when we’ve finished we vote on the best ideas and then begin implementing our ideas to improve the school.
What makes a good School Councillor? A School Councillor needs to be able to:
- Communicate ideas;
- Understand and listen to the views of others;
- Be a good role model who can be trusted;
- Be reliable;
At St. Anne’s every class votes to determine who will be their Class Councillor. Before voting, the children if interested, must put forward their reasons for wanting to represent the class. Once the children have shared their ideas then the class hold a vote and the children with the most votes will become School Councillors.

This year 2022-2023 our focus is:

For all children to be safe and aware of managing risks online and in the real world. - managing money and developing themselves as online learners.
- For all children to develop a deep understanding of who they are and faithful prayer.
- Continue to develop the Library and our love of reading- Library and parent reading activities.

For all children to have a developed understanding of local, national and global issues e.g. Climate change and Clean Air Zone in Birmingham.
- Continuing to Improve our curriculum through developed understanding of diversity.

WHat we have done |
Together with the school we have improved two areas of our outdoor space. The first being our playgrounds, we have introduced outdoor fitness equipment in both the lower and upper playgrounds and have ensured each child has been instructed on how to use them safely with a proper instructor.
Our School Councillors have also worked hard to improve the safety on the roads by discussing the issue with parents.governors and pupils and investing in safety signs to prevent people parking along the yellow lines outside of the school.
